October snow storm!

I intended to do a bunch of blog posts for the week yesterday... But I couldn't because my parents house has no electricity. So no computer and no Internet (no heat either... Brrrrrr)

Sorry but there won't be any new posts this week while we wait for power to be restored.

I'm not the only person with this problem: http://questionablecontent.net

In honor of Halloween this weekend (ok, Monday but still, you'll celebrate this weekend, right?)
Instead of animals, we'll have children dressed as animals...

This is for Tallman...

I know this is the second one of these I've put up this week, but I'm lazy, and Tallman is really into foxes right now.... his last wallpaper on his computer was of a fox smiling. Weird, but cute.

That last one was for me... its been a long week...

Book Review: Bossypants

Have you read Bossypants? Do you like 30 Rock? Did you enjoy Baby Mama? What about Bridesmaids? I think Bossypants is a little more like Bridesmaids than Baby Mama, because its crude, but more like 30 Rock than anything else because its a little stream of consciousness and that consciousness is TINA FEY.

I 120% enjoyed this book. I enjoyed when she was crude, impolitic, and not oversharing details which left me guessing more about her life than I thought I wanted to know (example, I didn't know she had a scar on her face, just didn't notice, but she mentioned it a bunch and pointedly did not tell the story of how she got it other than she was a child and it was in an alley, and now I'm really really curious, more than before when I didn't notice she had a scar...)

The best thing about this book is that its funny. Laugh aloud, people-think-you're crazy-until-they-see-you're-reading-Tina-Fey's-book, funny. My one complaint is that she doesn't like the c-word. I do. But I probably wouldn't like being called it either, especially by a co-worker.
Anyway, Tina Fey rocks, and so does this book. Read it.

My commute has worn me out...

My commute has worn me out (two hours each way to my parents house) and so all I have the heart to post for Wednesday is this:

My Office Chair...

I just wanted to let you all know how it is going between me and my chair...
The black target pillow is working well, sometimes I sit on it to raise me above where the chair digs into my back, sometimes I have it behind my back as a bit of a cushion. Frequently I alternate between these two positions depending on what I'm doing and how my back is feeling.

Ultimately I think this works for now, but I'll probably want to figure something else out in addition to my pillow, to keep my back from hurting during the work week.
Maybe this?
Massaging Lounge Chair from Brookstone
Kidding.
Probably. :p

Weekend Shopping Fun Times

Well, as I said I would on Friday, I went shopping at Jcrew this weekend and bought SO MUCH!
I bought cardigans in blue, green, purple, and camel.
Jcrew Jackie Cardigan
I bought scoop neck t shirts in gray, "wave crest, red, and grape.
Jcrew Perfect Fit Scoop Neck Tee
I bought tissue turtlenecks in black, gray, and stripes... because layering is important (especially when you live in houses where you are not in control of the thermostat.
JCrew Tissue Tee
THEN, my personal shopper was amazing and found for me, then had shipped to me things that were sold out almost everywhere and I either wouldn't have been able to get, or would've had to wait until January. AWESOME!
Jcrew No. 2 pencil Skirt
I got this in black and in a color that my personal shopper recommended and is slightly bluer than this one, and not heathered. I trust him that it will be gorgeous.
And finally, last but not least, instead of waiting until January to get the black Winnie Dress, I'll be getting it in the mail this week!
YAY!

Cannot recommend the personal shoppers at Jcrew enough. Obviously they want to sell, but they know clothes, they know Jcrew clothes and they will help you find what looks best on you. And clearly I got some help in the color department!

Book Review: The Winter Sea

Last week I read The Winter Sea, by Susana Kearsley. It was totally awesome and I cannot recommend it more. Its a fiction book that takes place now and jumps back and forth to the story the author is writing. I won't ruin the awesome twist for you but lets just say that if you're a scientists you won't like this book because you know how DNA works.

But if you're capable of suspending disbelief a little (which I hope you are) you will probably enjoy this book. Its got love, war, espionage, romance (love and romance are different yes?), twist endings, loveable characters. The best thing I liked about this book was how long it was. It just kept going, which was great because I enjoyed it so much I wanted the story to keep going.

And oh man did I enjoy the ending, I could tell it was coming a bit, but also hoping it was coming. If that makes any sense. I will definitely be reading more of Susanna Kearsley's work in the future!

Sleepy Kitty of the Week

Monday? Already?!
I'd much rather be curled up on a couch taking a nap like Parsley is...
I wonder about Parsley's job satisfaction....
Happy Monday!

Required Weekend Shopping Spree

Ok, so I don't have enough work clothes. Two weeks into the endeavor it is clear, I wear the same 5 outfits on rotation. But now that I have received a paycheck I feel like I can fix this problem.
I will fix this problem by visiting my favorite personal shopper at Jcrew this weekend.
Here is a visual list of the things I plan on trying on and if they fit, purchasing:
JCrew Keynote dress
Emmaleigh Dress
I prefer to wear skirts or dresses to work, they usually fit better, but these say "straight skirt" not full or a-line, so they might not fit as well, we'll see.
Jcrew Suit
I'll probably end up getting a new black suit, with suit pants, just in case I'm feeling whimsical and want to wear pants some day.

JCrew Winnie Dress
I got this dress in gray and I love love love love it!
Jcrew Teddie Dress
Jcrew Cashmere Tshirt Sweater
Jcrew Cashmere Cardigan
JCrew Jackie Cardigan
If I had to choose a favorite Jcrew article of clothing it would be the Jackie cardigan. It is the most worn item in my wardrobe and I have 5.... soon to be more I hope, they're so dang useful!

I'll let you know how my expedition this weekend goes, and what I come home with!

Tiffany Pins

Do you think that if you saw someone wearing one of these you would immediately realize they were wearing the cost of a luxury car on their lapel? Or would you assume it was fake?
From Tiffanys

So bling-y! Intense! and sooooooo expensive!

Decorative Pins

I like my work clothes to be pretty boring. Maybe its because I'm a lawyer, or maybe its because I'm boring. I like black, gray, and navy solids with my color coming in through cardigans or a shirt in an otherwise muted ensemble. (Maybe later, I'll show you my outfits)
But I like pins. Pins can accent colors in an outfit or make an otherwise dull outfit a little bit more interesting. Currently the only pin I own is a little bit like this one:
Vintage Purple Flower Pin
But I think I might get a couple more, to keep my outfits from being overly boring. I went to Etsy (because I don't REALLY want to spend over $100 on a pin) to get an idea of what I liked...
Vintage Milk Glass Juliana Brooch
Octapus Vintage Pin
(what is the point of having a pin be your outfits point of interest if it isn't interesting?)
Vintage Trifari Pin
Vintage Carved Coral and Jade Pin
Pins, Brooches, whatever, they're a cute way to enliven a gray, navy or black work ensemble.

My work chair...

My major complaint about my new job is that I hate my chair. Weird, and probably good that it isn't something worse, I know, but I have some fairly annoying back problems and my chair makes my back pain so much worse.
So after talking to some people about it, I decided to try a pillow. First I'm going to try a pillow you sit on, and if that doesn't improve things (by raising me up so the part of the chair that currently is digging into my shoulders awkwardly is instead supporting beneath them) I'll try a lumbar support pillow.

Have you guys tried these from Brookstones? Have you liked them?
Tempur-pedic Seat Cushion
Nap Form Mini Lumbar
For now I've gotten something like this to sit on... lets hope it works!
Target Decorative pillow
Because if this doesn't work, damn. It will be no good, and my poor pregnant massage therapist will have to see me more than my normal twice a month (I told you my back has problems) and that could get seriously expensive.
Anyone have any work chair/back pillow suggestions?

Scarf Tying

I bought a scarf on sale this weekend at the Coach Outlet (I also bought a purse for myself, and a birthday present for Tallman... more posts to come).

I like the idea of scarves, they seem very Parisian, and practical in a chilly office (which I have).
But I'm always confused as to how to wear them.
I'm going to try wearing mine like this... its the least awful demonstration I've seen on how to wear a scarf...

Butterfly Knot
Do you wear a silk scarf ever? If so... how?

Fall Foliage!!!

Its finally here!!!! Everywhere I look trees are turning!
Sure its later than usual, and its pretty muted because of Hurricane Irene and 80 degree days up to the middle of October. But I love the fall and we've been having some pretty gorgeous weather.

Birthday Update

Whew, I can't believe my birthday was only last week. I had a great birthday though, full of friends and ice cream cake and good times.
And really awesome presents, here are a few for you to be jealous of:
State Cookie Cutters
A Le Creuset Baking dish, in green of course!
Not these bee mugs, but sorta similar
Jcrew Liquid Silk Skirt
AND on Tuesday at work they had carrot cake for my birthday, it was the nicest!
So thanks to all my friends who made my birthday special, through being there, presents, cards, and well wishes!

Or would you rather it not be Monday? I suppose you could act like Parsley and fall asleep on your desk... I don't recommend it though

Which bag is the least professional?

A pretty big part of me wants a bag that is a little bit ridiculous.... which of these is too unprofessional for words work?

Yeaaaahhh I don't think I could bring any of these to work, my office is pretty conservative. Maybe the gold one... I kinda like the gold one for "most work appropriate ridiculous bag"... THOUGHTS?
